How do we live a blessed life, one without any regrets? We need God’s words. Psalm 119:1-8, the longest of all the psalms, is all about the blessings of aligning our conduct and conversation with God’s words.
We are blessed when we stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by God.
If you were strolling on a beach and found a message in a bottle, what would you do? Would you walk past or stop and read the message?
In 1 Thessalonians 1:1-2-16 Paul is speaking to the Thessalonians. The church in Thessalonica was a model church (v.1:7):
“Believers look up to you, all over the place” (vv. 7-8). The Thessalonica was a church full of faith, love and hope. “They marvel at how expectantly you await the arrival of Jesus, who rescued us from certain doom” (v.10). The church was loved by God (v.4). It was a church boldly proclaiming the words of God. The Lord’s message rang out from them, not only in Macedonia and Achaia but everywhere (v.8).
This should be our aim and our prayer – to be a church worthy of imitation, where the gospel rings out not only in our own local area, but everywhere. The aim is not empire building, but gospel spreading. Paul does not commend the Thessalonians for the size of their church, he commends them – “YOU’RE THE MESSAGE” (v.8).
We are someone’s message! If we do not speak forth what God sent us to speak, it is like God’s message is encapsulated in a bottle floating on an ocean waiting to be opened. God’s message does not simply come with words but with power of the Holy Spirit.
Being entrusted with the gospel is an immense privilege. We must proclaim faithfully the words of God, taking on the great responsibility he has bestowed on us. We are accountable to God alone and should not be concerned weather preaching the gospel pleases other people – be concerned with what pleases God.
