Have you spent time looking for your keys – house keys, car keys, work keys? You know you had them recently because you just used them and you even know you will find them again…eventually! Without the keys however, you do not have the power to open or unlock your home, car or place of business.
Captain Chesley Burnett “Sully” who after hitting a flock of geese on January 15, 2009, landed his crippled US Airways flight 1549 in the Hudson River. All 155 on the flight survived – Amen!
The Mayor of New York City gave Captain Sully the “key” to the city. This was considered an immense privilege. The key symbolized access and authority. Keys are given in recognition of some great service to the city.
In the New Testament, we see that Jesus is the key holder. The risen Christ says “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death” Revelation 1:18. Jesus has given us the keys: Matthew 16:19.
We should not be living powerless, lacking in any kind of spiritual authority. We need to have such a close personal relationship with Jesus that we know what we have. To be given the keys of the Kingdom means we have been given access to God. This is what Jesus achieved for us. God has always looked for those who “seek” Him with their whole hearts (Psalm 14:2).
How do we receive the keys? By Faith! We must understand and acknowledge who Jesus is. Jesus gives Peter the keys saying “On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven (v 18-19).
Jesus builds the church on our faith. Peter receives the keys of the Kingdom and on the day of Pentecost, Peter opened the door for 3,000 people (Acts 2:41). Peter was not the only person who had keys to the kingdom. Jesus gives us the same.
Jesus knows each one of our works. He knows the heart attitude behind our works too. When we have a good heart attitude, the Lord opens doors for us that no one, not even the enemy can close.
Use the keys to unlock doors and change lives. You have the power to change the world.
